Set in the showroom of the Chrysler Building in Manhattan, this view shows a 1937 Chrysler Airflow four-door sedan, a car whose streamlined body was shaped with wind tunnel testing. Chrysler introduced the Airflow in 1934 as a break from boxy automobile styling, but buyers were slow to embrace its unfamiliar profile, and the company later softened the design. The photograph captures the automaker's effort to present its newest model in the Art Deco tower that carried its name, a showcase that reflected the confidence of the corporation during the late 1930s.
