The record names Harvard, the college across the Charles River in Cambridge, which explains its place on this Boston board. Founded in 1636, Harvard is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, and by the early twentieth century its yard and buildings were familiar subjects for news photographers. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of current events from the early 1900s into the 1920s. The record gives no date, and its title is unverified, so the exact view and occasion remain uncertain.
