Little is recorded about this glass negative beyond its title, "Harvard," which the Bain News Service wrote on its caption card. The picture is one of the news photographs made by George Grantham Bain's agency, which supplied images to newspapers in the early twentieth century and built a large body of pictures of American cities and institutions. Harvard University, founded in 1636 in Cambridge, just across the Charles River from Boston, was a frequent subject for such pictures. Since the record gives no date or detail of the scene, the view itself is best read as a document of the agency's interest in the campus and its surroundings.
