The record names only "Harvard," a title the Bain News Service itself marked as unverified, so this picture most likely shows the university in Cambridge, across the Charles River from Boston. Founded in 1636, it is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. The Bain agency, run by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied newspapers with photographs of news and notable places in the early twentieth century, and its glass negatives now form a large part of the Library of Congress holdings. Glass plates captured fine detail but break easily, so the surviving negative is worth noticing as a physical record of how press photographs were made.
