A group of military motorcycle riders gathered at Harvard, in Cambridge across the Charles River from Boston, is the subject of this glass negative. The plate is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection of news photographs from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures from about 1900 into the 1920s. The title comes from caption information written by the agency and has not been independently verified, so the exact occasion and date remain uncertain. Motorcycles were still a fairly new military tool in that period, used mainly for messenger and dispatch work, which makes the image a useful view of how the machines were being introduced.
