The subject is a drill squad from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, one of the press pictures that the Bain News Service sold to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified notes on the negative or caption card, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Military drill on American campuses was common during the period, especially around the First World War, when colleges organized students into training units. The image survives as a glass negative of 5 by 7 inches or smaller, and it is part of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress.
