Hugo Grotius, the Dutch jurist and humanist born in Delft in 1583, appears in this engraving, which the record dates only to between 1640 and 1740, so it was likely made around or after his death in 1645. The record does not name the engraver, but the print belongs to a wave of portraits that circulated in the later seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, when his reputation as a founder of international law was at its height. His 1625 treatise *On the Laws of War and Peace* shaped European thinking about sovereignty and the conduct of war for generations. He also made a dramatic escape from Loevestein Castle in 1621, smuggled out in a book chest, which became one of the best-known episodes of his life.
