Richard Amerson is identified here by name, which sets this small print apart from the many anonymous portraits in the Federal Writers' Project series. The photograph belongs to a body of images made between 1936 and 1938 as part of the Works Progress Administration, when federal writers and photographers gathered accounts from people who had been enslaved before emancipation. Most of the sitters were by then elderly, and the portraits were meant to accompany their oral testimonies. The modest 3 by 2 inch gelatin silver print preserves a direct record of an older Black man whose life spanned slavery and freedom.
