Few ski posters of the late 1930s look as modern as this one, which pairs the slopes of Mont Tremblant in Quebec with the bold graphic style of designer Herbert Bayer. Bayer, an Austrian-born Bauhaus-trained artist who had only recently settled in the United States, brought modernism's flat color and clean lettering to commercial work. Issued in 1939, the poster was aimed at skiers in both the United States and Canada, at a time when the Laurentian hills north of Montreal were just becoming a destination for winter sport. Worth noticing is how the sport is reduced to simple shapes that still suggest speed and open snow.
