Superbagnères, a winter sports station above the spa town of Bagnères-de-Luchon in the French Pyrenees, is the subject of this 1929 poster. Leonetto Cappiello, the Italian-born artist who became one of Paris's most recognized poster designers, created it for the Chemins de Fer du Midi, the railway company that carried visitors south toward the mountains. His bold shapes and flat areas of color suited the subject of skiing, and the piece shows how railway companies of the period used posters to make mountain holidays look modern and fashionable.
