Winter Sports in the Vosges," a 1931 poster, invites travelers to reach the snowy slopes of the low mountain range in northeastern France by train. It was issued by the Chemins de Fer de l'Est, the Eastern Railway, and printed in Paris by the firm C. Courtois. In the interwar years, railway companies commissioned posters like this one to fill seats on weekend and holiday trains, at a time when skiing was becoming a popular leisure pursuit in France. The design ties the sport to the ease of getting out of the city and into the mountains.
