Le Markstein, a mountain station in the Vosges, is the subject here, promoted as a new winter destination under the title "La Nouvelle Station des Vosges." Paris publisher Lucien Serre & Cie issued the color poster around 1925, and the artist's signature reads Chauffard. In the 1920s, French tourism boards and transport companies used posters like this to draw city dwellers to snowfields that were newly reachable by rail and road, and skiing was just becoming a fashionable pastime. The image reflects that moment, when winter sport was being sold as a modern, healthful escape.
