The title names two overlapping authorities: the Territory of New Mexico, a civil government organized by Congress in 1850, and the Military Department of New Mexico, the Army command responsible for the region's forts and campaigns. In 1867 that headquarters, based in Santa Fe, was still dealing with the aftermath of the Navajo Long Walk and the Bosque Redondo reservation, and its posts spread across a territory far larger than the present state. The record does not identify a canyon as the subject, so the Grand Canyon heading on this board should be read with caution.
