This is a map rather than a view, and it is the record of Lieutenant Joseph C. Ives's 1857-1858 survey of the Colorado River. Ives's party came up the river by steamboat from the Gulf of California, mapping the channel and its shores as they went, and then continued overland into the canyon country. The Army's Corps of Topographical Engineers commissioned such surveys to chart the Southwest for future military, settlement and transport routes. Ives's work is also notable for its record of the canyon walls and the region's geology, which shaped how Americans first pictured the Grand Canyon.
