This 1867 map by Hartley shows Arizona in the years after it became a separate territory in 1863, when much of its interior was still poorly surveyed. Maps of this period were usually pieced together from army reconnaissance, mining reports and travelers' accounts, so the canyon country along the Colorado River was often drawn with less detail than the settled southern valleys. Its presence in a Grand Canyon collection points to how little of the gorge had been charted before John Wesley Powell's 1869 expedition brought it into far sharper focus.
