This 1807 map charts the Internal Provinces of New Spain, the northern territories that the Spanish crown governed separately from the viceroyalty's core in central Mexico. Its far northwestern reaches extend toward the Colorado River country, the region that later became home to the Grand Canyon, though this region appears in broad outline rather than detail. Maps of this era drew on Spanish military and mission surveys, so their accuracy varies from place to place. The map shows how little of the interior was known to European cartographers at the time.
