Here the French artist Eug Courboin casts Germany's Crown Prince Wilhelm as a common burglar, a caricature meant to shame him as a thief of French property. The lithograph is dated 1914, the first year of the war, when Wilhelm led a German army in the invasion of France. It appeared in a series titled *Les estampes populaires*, cheap color prints aimed at ordinary readers, so its crude humor and bold color were designed to be understood quickly on the street. Posters like this helped turn the war into a moral story about German aggression, with the enemy's royal family cast as criminals.
