This 1916 two-color lithograph advertises the serialization of *Le Feu* (*Under Fire*), Henri Barbusse's novel drawn from his notes as a soldier, in Gustave Téry's Paris newspaper *L'Œuvre*. Barbusse's book, a frank account of front-line life in the trenches, was published that year and won the Prix Goncourt, and it became one of the most widely read French war novels. The poster was designed to promote the newspaper's publication of the work, which made it a rare example of wartime literature being marketed through street advertising.
