The poster promotes the 5 percent national loan of 1915 and carries the name of the Banca Popolare di Milano, which ties the appeal to a Milan bank. Italy entered the First World War in May 1915, and the government financed the war partly through domestic bonds sold to ordinary savers, with banks handling subscriptions. Posters like this one tried to persuade people to lend their savings to the state as a patriotic duty. The print later passed through the Rehse Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a German collection of political and wartime material.
