A skeleton in German military dress is unmasked in this 1916 French poster, which asks "Bas les masques?" ("Off with the masks?") and answers "Voilà!" It advertised *La Baïonnette*, a satirical weekly that appeared on Thursdays during the First World War, and it uses death itself to mock the German soldier and the propaganda surrounding him. The record credits Paul Iribe with the signature and names Cappiello, Fabiano, and Abel Faivre as designers, a group of illustrators who helped shape French wartime graphic satire. The bold color and simple composition show how a lithograph poster could carry a joke to the street quickly.
