Few newspapers of 1914 made a bigger promise to readers than *Le Petit Journal*, whose poster offered free maps of the three major fronts, West, East, and the Balkans, with each purchase. The figure at its center is General Joseph Joffre, the French commander in chief whose armies held the line at the Marne that September. The record credits the design to Joseph Binder and notes a photograph by Pierre Petit, a reminder that the poster combined photography with color lithography. Its appeal lay in letting readers follow the war on a map from home.
