Here the call to duty is labor rather than combat: the Italian words read "Work is the new duty!" above a banner for the Prestito Nazionale, the national loan. Printed in 1918, as the war was ending, the poster ties the government's bond drive to the postwar task of rebuilding the economy and reabsorbing returning soldiers. Its subject headings also point to veterans and to the economic side of the war's aftermath in Italy, so it shows how wartime fundraising turned toward peacetime work. The large format and color lithography were typical of state propaganda posters meant for public walls.
