The title on this glass negative, Nat'l Anthem Day, suggests a patriotic observance, but the record gives no date, and the wording comes from caption data that has not been verified. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Pictures from such agencies were usually made for quick publication, so they record events as they were reported. The Star-Spangled Banner did not become the official national anthem until 1931, but without a date or location, the link to the anthem remains a caption clue rather than a confirmed fact.
