Quarters for army students at Columbia, as the Bain News Service captioned this glass negative, point to the wartime training programs that filled American campuses in the late 1910s. The Student Army Training Corps, created in 1918, enlisted college men who continued their studies while preparing for service, and campus dormitories and other buildings were often converted into their living quarters. The place name comes from an unverified caption, so it is worth checking whether "Columbia" refers to a university campus or another location. Bain's news photo service, active from about 1900 into the 1920s, left a large body of such scenes.
