Little is recorded about this glass negative beyond its title, Women's Land Army, which comes from caption cards or the negatives themselves, as noted by the Bain News Service. The agency sold news pictures from New York from about 1899 into the early 1930s, so the image most likely dates to that span. During World War I, Women's Land Army programs in the United States recruited women to fill farm jobs left open by men who had gone to war, from planting and harvesting to dairy work. Glass negatives like this one were the working originals from which newspapers and magazines made their prints.
