The title names a place, Piping Rock, though the record notes that the Bain News Service caption supplying it is unverified. The name is best known in connection with Locust Valley on Long Island's North Shore, where the Piping Rock Club became a center of country-club sport and society in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service was a New York picture agency whose glass negatives, mostly made from about 1900 to the 1920s, recorded news, public figures and scenes for newspapers. This record gives no date, so the moment of exposure is uncertain, but it belongs to a body of press photography that documents how such places were pictured for a wide public.
