The two names attached to this glass negative, Barbara Loeb and Barbara Krech, come from unverified data written on the negative or its caption card, so the identities remain uncertain. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of news, celebrities and daily life in the early twentieth century. Plates of this size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were standard for press work of the period, and the collection shows how news photographs were made and circulated before halftone printing became routine.
