Orille Harrold is the name attached to this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection. Harrold was an American stage performer active in the early twentieth century, and Bain News Service, the New York agency George Grantham Bain founded, supplied portraits of performers and public figures to newspapers of that time. The record gives no date, and the name comes from information the agency wrote on the negative or its caption card, which has not been independently verified. Glass negatives of this size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were the standard working medium for newspaper photographers of the period, so the plate offers a direct look at how such pictures were made.
