Lafayette Day honored the Marquis de Lafayette, the French nobleman who served under George Washington during the American Revolution and became one of the best-known foreign friends of the young United States. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that sold news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, produced the glass negative, and the record gives no exact date for the scene. Observances of Lafayette's life grew during the World War I era, when American and French ties were closely publicized. The picture is worth a look for how such commemorations were staged and photographed at the time.
