Wilmerding, a company town a few miles east of Pittsburgh, grew up around the Westinghouse Air Brake Company's works, so this view of the plant records the place that gave the town its identity. George Westinghouse had patented the automatic air brake in 1869, and by the early 1900s his brakes were standard on American railroad cars, which made the Wilmerding factory central to the rail industry. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its color and black-and-white views of American places, produced the picture around 1905. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative still has a chipped lower left corner, a small reminder of its handling over the decades.
