This color halftone print by Arthur Szyk, dated 1948, places Moses beside the Star of David to frame the founding of the State of Israel as the fulfillment of ancient Jewish history. Szyk, a Polish-born illustrator who settled in the United States, was known for richly detailed, manuscript-style illustrations that drew on medieval and biblical imagery. The title, "Independence of Israel," ties the work to the declaration of statehood in May 1948, when many Jewish artists and communities responded to the event with symbolic art. The print's New Canaan imprint refers to Szyk's home in Connecticut, where he lived and worked during these years.
