Few posters from the period pair a bustling town street with a camel, but this 1938 silkscreen by Elise Abramson does exactly that, using the contrast to suggest a land where old and new travel side by side. Silkscreen was a relatively new method for commercial posters at the time, and it allowed bold flat color that suited travel advertising. Posters like this one were produced to draw visitors to Mandate Palestine during the late 1930s, when the country was under British administration and growing in population. The image reflects the promotional style of the period, presenting the land as both modern and rooted in its older traditions.
