Joe Ryan, identified here as a mascot, is the subject of this 1922 picture made in St. Louis, and the record gives the date as August 16. The glass negative came from the National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented American cities and events in the early twentieth century, and Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Mascots of that era often appeared at sporting events and civic gatherings, which places the scene in the city's public life. The title and date are unverified notes from the company, and the glass shows streaks from natural deterioration of its coating.
