The only label for this plate is "Thomas," a title the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the record notes that the information has not been verified, so the exact subject remains uncertain. The company produced a large body of work in the 1920s, photographing streets, buildings and events in cities across the United States, and its negatives often served publishers and other commercial clients. St. Louis was then a busy river port and manufacturing center, and its scenes from these years offer a useful view of everyday urban life. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from the coating deteriorating over the decades, which is worth keeping in mind when looking at the image.
