The caption on this 1924 glass negative gives its subject only as "Severoid," a label the Library of Congress notes was supplied by the National Photo Company and has not been independently verified. The company, based in Washington, D.C., produced large numbers of views of American cities in the early twentieth century, and this plate is one of its St. Louis subjects. Glass negatives of this period were coated by hand with light-sensitive emulsion, and the record notes that the streaks and blemishes visible on this example likely result from natural deterioration of those coatings. The plate came to the Library in 1947 as a gift from Herbert A. French.
