The title gives only the name Williams and places the scene in St. Louis in 1924, and the Library of Congress has not verified the name, so the subject remains uncertain. The image survives on a glass negative of 4 by 5 inches or smaller, a format commercial photographers of the 1920s used widely for city views. The National Photo Company, based in Washington, D.C., made many such pictures of American places and events in the early twentieth century. Note the streaks and blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
