The title on this glass negative places the scene at Danforth in St. Louis, though the National Photo Company recorded that name on the negative or its sleeve, and it has not been independently verified. Dated 1924, the image belongs to the company's large body of city views, made for commercial sale when postcards and illustrated publications created steady demand for pictures of American towns. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual deterioration of the original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
