The title on this 1924 view, *Grant, St. Louis*, is a single name rather than a description. The National Photo Company supplied it without verification, so it may refer to a place named for Ulysses S. Grant, who lived in St. Louis in the 1850s. The company, based in Washington, D.C., documented American cities and landmarks in the early twentieth century. Herbert A. French gave this glass negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and streaks and blemishes from the breakdown of its original coatings are still visible, a reminder of how fragile the medium is.
