Vassar College, founded in 1861 by brewer Matthew Vassar and opened in 1865, was one of the first American institutions to offer women a full four-year liberal arts education comparable to that of men's colleges. This c1892 view of the Poughkeepsie campus, on a bluff above the Hudson River, shows an institution that was then a prominent symbol of women's higher education. The record notes a U.S. Copyright Office registration, which suggests the view was issued for sale, a common practice for college scenes in the 1890s.
