Few subjects from the early republic captured the revivalist fervor of the 1820s as vividly as this lithograph of an outdoor camp meeting. Its title, along with the painter credit to A. Rider and the stone drawing by H. Bridport, shows a collaboration typical of the period, in which a painted scene was transferred to limestone for printing. Camp meetings drew families and congregations from wide areas to open-air sites for several days of preaching, prayer, and singing, and they were central to the Second Great Awakening. Lithography, then a fairly new and affordable printing method, allowed such scenes to circulate widely among ordinary households.
