The title sets two roads, good and evil, against each other, a moral choice that echoes the familiar scriptural image of a broad way and a narrow one. Preachers and Sunday school teachers drew on that picture constantly in the nineteenth century. John Hailer drew and published this color lithograph in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, around 1862, in the middle of the Civil War, when devotional and moral images were widely sold for homes and classrooms. Its regional origin makes it a useful contrast to the larger New York firms that dominated the American print trade.
