Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph with a title in both French and Spanish, "Je suis el bon pasteur," which reads as "I am the good shepherd" and echoes the language of John 10:11 in the New Testament. The bilingual caption points to the firm's wide market, since its prints were sold to households across the country, including Spanish-speaking and French-speaking buyers. Printed in New York sometime between 1856 and 1907, the image belongs to the firm's large body of religious subjects, which were popular for home devotion and cataloged in the Gale Research catalog raisonné.
