The title quotes the opening line of the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1, and this hand-colored lithograph takes that scripture as its subject. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued it around 1876, produced large numbers of sheets like this for middle-class homes, where religious scenes hung alongside landscapes and domestic subjects. Because colorists often worked by hand on each impression, tones could vary from one copy to the next. The catalog number in the record places it among the firm's documented output of the period.
