Among the many sentimental scenes that Currier & Ives sold, this lithograph stands out for its title, "God bless our school," which asks a blessing on an institution rather than on a family or a landscape. The New York firm, then at 125 Nassau Street, published it around 1874, the year it was entered for copyright at the Library of Congress. Public schooling was expanding across the country in the 1870s, and the firm's hand-colored lithographs found a ready market among families who wanted images of home, faith and learning. The print is listed in Gale's catalog raisonné of the firm's work and was later shown in the Cantor Center's exhibition *American ABC*.
