Currier & Ives, the New York firm famous for mass-produced color lithographs, issued this print around 1872 under the title taken from the Lord's Prayer, "Give us this day our daily bread." Rather than a scene of a particular place or event, it is a still-life arrangement of wheat sheaves, fruit, and a loaf, with a religious emphasis that the subject headings tie to the harvest and to the everyday sustenance the petition asks for. Lithographs like this one were sold cheaply to middle-class households, where they hung as devotional or domestic decoration, so the print also offers a window into how Victorian Americans blended faith and the abundance of the home.
