The title comes from the last line of Francis Scott Key's "The Star-Spangled Banner," where Key ends with "And this be our motto: 'In God is our trust.'" Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive color lithographs to a broad public, issued this hand-colored print around 1874, when the phrase was already linked to American patriotism. The motto later appeared on U.S. coins from 1864 and became the national motto in 1956. The archaic wording of the title, with "is" in place of "we," is worth noticing next to that later formula.
