Few sites in nineteenth-century Catholic devotion drew more attention than Lourdes, the town in southwestern France where a young girl, Bernadette Soubirous, reported visions of the Virgin Mary in a grotto in 1858. Pilgrims soon came to the spring and shrine that grew up at the site, and the devotion spread widely beyond France. This hand-colored lithograph was issued by Currier & Ives, the New York firm that produced many inexpensive religious scenes for popular buyers. The record dates it only to between 1856 and 1907, so its exact year is uncertain.
