This lithograph takes the opening words of the Lord's Prayer, "Our Father who art in heaven," as its title, and its subject is angels, a common theme in 1870s devotional prints. It was published by H.M. Crider in York, Pennsylvania, around 1876, and engraved by A. Hoen & Co., a lithography firm. Registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, it reflects the wide market for inexpensive religious pictures that families displayed in parlors and sitting rooms during the decades after the Civil War. Look closely at how the printed text and imagery work together, since such prints often paired scripture with sentimental illustration.
