The phrase in this print's title, "In God is our trust," closes the final stanza of Francis Scott Key's "The Star-Spangled Banner," where Key offers it as a motto for the nation. Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph in New York around 1874, when the firm was producing inexpensive sheets for a broad home market, and religious and patriotic subjects were popular. The motto had begun appearing on U.S. coins in 1864, though it did not become the official national motto until 1956, so the print reflects a sentiment that was widely held well before it was formally adopted. The hand-coloring, applied by workers after the stone printing, gives each sheet the slightly individual look typical of the firm's work.
