Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph under the title "God spake all these words," a phrase from the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20:1, and it belongs to the firm's long run of religious and moral subjects aimed at Protestant households. The firm, based in New York, made its prints affordable through mass production, so pictures like this one could hang in parlors and family rooms across the country. Its date of about 1876 places it in the years when the company was at the height of its popularity, and the catalog raisonné compiled by Gale Research (no. 2602) gives researchers a standard reference for tracing it.
